Who we are and who this covers
Reclaim is operated by 18152195 Canada Inc., a federal corporation based in Ontario, Canada. This policy covers the Reclaim mobile app and this website. Because we handle personal information in the course of commercial activity in Canada, we are governed by the federal Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA).
Reclaim is a self-help and recovery support tool. It is not a medical device, and it does not diagnose or treat any condition. It is not a substitute for professional care.
This app is in beta
Reclaim is currently in beta testing. Features change, and data written during beta may be reset or migrated as we fix things. We will tell you before any reset that would lose your history. Please do not rely on Reclaim as your only record of anything that matters to you — use You → Export data to keep your own copy.
What we collect
Information you give us directly: your recovery start date, your estimate of a typical weekly loss, the kinds of betting you did, your goals, and a display name (which does not have to be your real one).
What you log as you use the app: daily check-ins and mood, urges and how they went, journal entries, relapse records, and any time capsules you record as text, audio, or video.
Account and technical data: your email address if you sign in with one, an account identifier, your subscription status, your device push token if you turn notifications on, and basic usage events such as app opens and which tools you used.
We do not collect bank or card details, browsing history, contacts, precise location, or your real identity beyond what you choose to enter. Payment is handled by Apple and by RevenueCat; we never see your card.
Why we collect it, and your consent
We use your information to run the features you asked for: to count your clean days, estimate money and hours reclaimed, show you your patterns, deliver reminders you switched on, and connect you to a buddy.
We ask for your consent when you sign up and when you turn on an individual feature. Because information about gambling and mental health is sensitive, we treat it that way: it is used for the purposes described here and no others. You can withdraw consent at any time by turning a feature off, or by deleting your account. Withdrawing consent for something the app needs in order to function may mean the app can no longer provide it.
Where your data lives
What is on your phone and what leaves it are different things right now, and we would rather be precise.
Stays on this device: your check-ins, your urge logs, your journal entries, your streak history, and your time-capsule recordings. During beta these are held in the app's local database and are not copied to our servers. If you lose the phone, you lose them — use You → Export data to keep a copy.
Goes to your account on Google Firebase: your sign-in details, your display name and settings, your Buddy profile and whatever its switches share, your buddy connections and any buddy chat, and your notification token.
Your account database is hosted in Google's Toronto region, so the information above is stored in Canada. Some Google services that sit alongside it — sign-in and push notifications among them — do not let us pin a region, so parts of that account and device data may still be processed outside Canada, including in the United States, where they are subject to that country's laws, including lawful access by foreign authorities. If you would rather nothing at all left your device, do not create an account.
How it is protected — plainly
What we send over the network is encrypted in transit, and what we store with Google is encrypted at rest. Access is scoped to your account by security rules, so another user cannot read your records. Our server holds free text as ciphertext — though during beta your journals are not being sent to it at all, as above.
What this does not mean: Reclaim is not end-to-end encrypted. We hold the keys, which means our systems — and a small number of authorised people — can read your content in order to operate the service, support you, and comply with the law. Anyone who tells you a cloud-synced app is private "even from us" is describing a different product. If that matters to you, keep your most sensitive reflections offline.
Buddy Link: what another person sees
If you set up a Buddy profile, anyone signed in to Reclaim can see your display name, your day count and your longest streak. That is how people looking for a buddy find you.
Buddies you connect with also see your bio, where you rate yourself on the profile's five stages, the gambling sites and apps you picked on your profile, and anything you send them in chat. If you trigger an SOS alert, they are told you are struggling.
Switches on your Buddy profile control the rest: today's mood and morning pledge, how often blocked apps were opened this week, your reasons for stopping and the month you started, and a summary of your week. That summary covers days clear, whether your count restarted, check-ins kept, urges logged and ridden out, blocks held, whether you recorded a time capsule, and your overall mood. Turn a switch off and buddies stop seeing that detail.
Buddies never see your money figures, your journal entries or what is in your time capsules. Either of you can disconnect at any time, which removes the connection from both sides.
Notifications
If you turn notifications on, we store your device push token so we can deliver them.
We keep two kinds separate. Notifications you asked for — your daily reminder, buddy messages, SOS alerts — are part of the service you switched on. Promotional messages about new features or offers are sent only if you separately opt in, in line with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), and every one of them carries a way to unsubscribe. Turning either off never turns off the other. You can also disable everything in iOS Settings → Notifications → Reclaim.
How long we keep it
We keep your account data for as long as your account exists, because your history is the point of the app — a streak is only meaningful if it is not reset behind your back.
If you delete your account, we erase your data from our systems immediately and it is removed from backups within 30 days. If you stop using Reclaim without deleting your account, we will delete an inactive account and its data after 24 months of no sign-in, after emailing you first if we have an address for you.
Your rights
Under PIPEDA you can ask us for access to the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it if it is wrong, withdraw your consent, and ask us to delete it. Two of these are built into the app and need no request at all: You → Export data gives you a complete copy as a file, and You → Delete account erases it.
For anything else, email us. We will respond within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our answer, you have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
If something goes wrong
If a breach of our security creates a real risk of significant harm to you, we will report it to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and notify you, as PIPEDA requires.
Age
Reclaim is for adults and is not directed at anyone under 18. We do not knowingly collect information from anyone under 18. If you believe someone under 18 has created an account, email us and we will delete it.
Note that the legal gambling age in Ontario is 19. Reclaim is a recovery tool rather than a gambling service, so we support adults from 18 — but if you are 18 and in Ontario, gambling is not legal for you at all, and the help below applies to you just the same.
